Johanna Liesbeth (“Lisa”) de Kooning, only daughter of Abstract Expressionist artist Willem de Kooning and illustrator Joan Ward, died Friday at her home in St. John, Virgin Islands, at age 56. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
Lisa de Kooning established the Willem de Kooning Foundation in 2001. She preserved his Long Island studio, at The Springs in East Hampton, as he left it.
She was also a sculptor, and was active in philanthropy, raising money for and donating to organizations such as Boys and Girls Harbor, Art for Animals, the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and East End charities and art programs.
