Having tested the New York waters for two years with a private Lower East Side viewing space, Lisson Gallery (London and Milan) will now build a home in Chelsea.
With an entrance on 24th Street, the gallery will neighbor other powerhouses like Gagosian Gallery, Metro Pictures and Andrea Rosen Gallery. It’s also a short distance from the Whitney Museum’s new building in the Meatpacking District.
The 47-year-old gallery represents titans like Marina AbramoviÄ? and Ai Weiwei along with younger artists such as Cory Arcangel, Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg and Ryan Gander.
Run by Alex Logsdail, son of founder Nicholas Logsdail, the new 8,500-square-foot venue will occupy a currently empty lot under the High Line elevated park and will extend from 23rd to 24th Street. The Lisson lot is owned by New York developer Alf Naman. Designed byStudio Christian Wassmann in collaboration with Markus Dochantschi of Studio MDA, the New York gallery will be Lisson’s fourth, joining two in London and one in Milan. It will open in the first half of 2015. Working with Logsdail will be Jeannie Freilich and Angela Brazda, who have also been based in New York.
