Inside a Chinatown office building, the fictional “art employer”/Milan-based collective Lucie Fontaine has organized a group exhibition in the form of an eccentric office tableau. Many of the sculptures on view could almost double as standard furnishings: there’s a desk by Gareth Long, a lamp by Andy Coolquitt and cubicle walls by Mika Tajima. Conflating the real and the virtual seems to be the aim of much of the work by the 16 artists and collectives represented here. The press release identifies the digital cryptocurrency Bitcoin as the impetus for “Soft Shock,” and a related text by Fontaine considers how real value is created in abstract economies. More intriguing, perhaps, is the revelation that such diverse examples of contemporary sculpture and painting congeal so well into an office-like configuration.
