Magnus Renfrew.
International auction house Bonhams has hired Magnus Renfrew as deputy chairman and director of fine arts, Asia. He will work out of the company’s Hong Kong headquarters and will take up his new post in September. Renfrew is currently Asia director at Art Basel.
Renfrew, 39, was founding director of ART HK, the Hong Kong International Art Fair, which launched in 2008 and was bought by MCH Group—Art Basel’s parent company—in 2011. In 2006, Renfrew served as head of exhibitions at dealer Pearl Lam’s Contrasts Gallery in Shanghai.
As deputy chairman and director of fine arts, Renfrew is returning to Bonhams, where, also in 2006, he was a specialist and was involved in initiating their first sale of contemporary Asian art in London.
At Bonhams, Renfrew will be in charge of the departments devoted to classical, modern and contemporary Asian art. He will strategize for the auction house in matters related to the fine arts in Asia and will sit on the Bonhams Asia board.
Founded in 1793 in London, Bonhams now has fine art and antique salesrooms in 15 international cities, including New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong.
