“I want the whole world to be in it,” says Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed about his new project, launching Mar. 1, which will transform the Gallery restaurant at London Sketch.
For Martin Creed at Sketch the artist will create a series of new artworks that engage design. “We initially approached Martin for the project as his practice already encompassed a playful approach to the public realm and he engages with site in a very lyrical but functional way,” explains Victoria Brooks, curator of the exhibition program at Sketch since 2006.
Previous works by Creed have taken up this theme: Work No. 1347 features 96 different types of marble in zigzagging lines to create a floor. Creed will also decorate the venue with a series of paintings and a large-scale work on the wall.
The environment will be simultaneously an exhibition, an artwork, a restaurant and an event space. The food on the menu, by Sketch co-founder, Michelin-star chef Pierre Gagnaire, will be directly influenced and inspired by Creed’s artwork.
Martin Creed at Sketch coincides with Sketch’s tenth anniversary. The restaurant was inaugurated by Gagnaire and restaurateur Mourad Mazouz, who previously collaborated with Carsten Höller on the Prada Foundation project Double Club. In the last decade, Sketch Gallery Foundation has organized over 50 on-site exhibitions and events, featuring work by Carsten Nicolai, John Baldessari, Jonas Mekas and Sylvie Fleury.
