Matt Bollinger is concerned with transience, a theme he here explores in both material and content. Using pieces of paper painted in an array of colors, he cuts and tears them into fragments that he transformatively collages into images of people and places. The effects of light and shadow that Bollinger achieves with his opaque fragments are quite dazzling: faces demarcated with yellow strips become backlit and haloed. There are also collaborations in the show, including a series of “notebook pages” with accounts of summer journeys all undertaken on one day in August by poet friends: Bollinger re-creates the pages as collages, injecting his own poetic dimension.
