Michael Raedecker: place, 2013, acrylic and thread on canvas, 69 by 102 3/8 inches. Courtsey Andrea Rosen Gallery.
There’s something ominous lurking amid the mundane scenes and objects (houses, palm trees, chandeliers) populating Michael Raedecker’s monochrome new works. The feeling of unease is likely due to the cut-up canvas fragments, as if a previously placid scene had been fractured apart, only to be roughly sutured back together.
