The board of the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles released a statement Tuesday proclaiming its commitment to remain independent, despite soliciting offers recently from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and others for possible mergers.
The statement, headlined “MOCA Trustees Committed to Independence,” reads:
“The Board is in agreement that the best future for MOCA would be as an independent institution. The Board understands that this will require a significant increase in MOCA’s endowment to ensure its strong financial standing. We are working quickly toward that goal, while at the same time exploring all strategic options, to honor the best interest of the institution and the artistic community we serve.”
The statement gives no details of fundraising efforts, and does not mention recent reports about a possible $100 million merger with LACMA or possible programming collaborations with the National Gallery of Art.
