New York’s Museum of Modern Art has hired Thomas J. Lax to the position of associate curator in the department of media and performance art. Lax joins the institution from the Studio Museum in Harlem, where he served as assistant curator for the past seven years. There, he organized exhibitions such as “When the Stars Begin to Fall: Imagination and the American South” (2014) and “Ayé A. Aton: Space-Time Continuum” (2013). He also initiated the Studio Lab residency program.
At MoMA, Lax will organize exhibitions, performances and events, and assist the department with the acquisition of new works. In addition to having written for A.i.A., Lax has worked on artist monographs for New York’s Artists Space, MoMA PS1 and the Whitney Museum of American Art, as well as for Munich’s Haus der Kunst, Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris and Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo. Lax will take up his new post in late August.
