Nan Swid

Best known for Swid Powell, a design firm famed for tableware created in collaboration with architects such as Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, Nan Swid has recently begun to show her own artworks in galleries in New York and Miami. Swid’s first solo at Margaret Thatcher features modest-sized wall assemblages composed of old books, disused ledgers and wooden boxes thickly covered with either encaustic or polymer paint. Much modernist heritage—from Kurt Schwitters’s collages to monochrome painting to Louise Nevelson constructs—is evoked in these cannily composed works, which offer a sophisticated interplay of forms, colors and textures.
