This fall will see some new projects in New York and the closing of one Lower East Side gallery.
Dealer Leslie Fritz is closing her Hester Street gallery after seven years. The current show, of paintings and works on paper by New York-based artist Robin Bruch, will be her last (through Nov. 10). The gallery was previously Renwick Gallery and operated in West SoHo, but moved to the Lower East Side in November, and represented artists including Talia Chetrit and Caitlin Keogh.
Sandra Gering Inc. is a new venture by the dealer who has been partners with Javier López in Gering & López since 2006 in the Crown Building, at 730 Fifth Avenue, representing artists including William Anastasi, Karim Rashid and Nancy Dwyer. Gering’s new business will open in November at 14 East 63rd St. “Javier opened a beautiful space in Madrid three years ago, and our partnership is ending amicably,” Gering told A.i.A. by phone. Gering’s first show will be new works by John F. Simon Jr., whose show “Points, Lines, and Colors in Succession” is at the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. (through Feb. 9, 2014). “We hope to open by Nov. 21,” Gering told A.i.A.
Paris gallery Balice Hertling, meanwhile, is reviving its activities in a Hell’s Kitchen space it occupied briefly, starting in 2011, as Balice Hertling & Lewis, with American art critic David Lewis. (Lewis opened his own gallery at 88 Eldridge St. last month.) An e-mail from the gallery announces it as a temporary exhibition space where “curator, critic and artist friends” will curate exhibitions and organize events. “Fearful Symmetry,” featuring a group of artists including Sam Falls, Gabriel Orozco and Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, opens Nov. 9 (through Dec. 14). It is curated by Zoe Stillpass, a PhD candidate at L’Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Science Sociales, Paris, and a lecturer at the Sorbonne.
