Ole Martin Lund Bø: Distilled Self Portrait, 2011, oil on canvas, 28 by 24 inches. Courtesy Denny Gallery.
This new Lower East Side gallery (it opened in early January) has another good show on view, this time of works by the young Norwegian artist Ole Martin Lund Bø. Lund Bø’s paintings, sculptures and photographs are materially tricky; you have to look twice to differentiate foil from paint, or metal from cardboard. A pair of oil-on-canvas paintings-mysteriously titled Distilled Self Portrait and Distilled Portrait of a Young Dancer Smoking-each present a bare, sandy-hued canvas with a multi-colored glob of paint on the lower right edge, as if Lund Bø scraped his palette knife clean and walked away.
