Twelve artists, all based in Beijing or Shanghai, offer their implicit response to the oft-asked question “what’s next in China?” The selections cover a wide range of mediums, including light (Li Hui), stop-action animation (Qiu Anxiong), painting (Yan Bing), photography (Yang Yongliang) and sculptural installation (Gao Weigang). Overall, the works tend to be darkly subdued and more formalist than socially engaged-a clear contrast to the Pop parodies and shock art of earlier post-Mao waves.
