Paris Photo has announced the launch of Paris Photo Los Angeles, the European fair’s first international extension, in April 2013.
With the fair’s success in Europe over the past 16 years, Paris Photo director Julien Frydman said in a press release, “Now is the time to bring Paris Photo to the U.S., and Los Angeles is the ideal city in which to launch. Not only is Los Angeles home to the creation of moving images, but the city also boasts a rich history of visual iconography.”
The fair seeks to incorporate Los Angeles’s rich film history. Paramount Pictures Studio, now celebrating its 100th anniversary, will host the inaugural L.A. edition. An international gallery committee–including representatives from three California galleries, one gallery in Munich and one in São Paulo–will select the fair’s participants.
Paris Photo Los Angeles will include four sections organized around Paramount Pictures Studios’ historic locations. One section will incorporate the New York Street Backlot, where each of the selected galleries will create a solo show using one of the sets. Other sections will explore the boundaries between the still and moving image in contemporary and modern art through special screenings and installations, as well as a series of dialogues with artists, organized by independent curator Douglas Fogle.
The 2012 edition of Paris Photo will take place this month in the Grand Palais in Paris, hosting over 150 exhibitors. Further details for Paris Photo Los Angeles will be released over the next several months.
