Irish curator, writer, artist and educator Paul O’Neill has been named director of the master of arts program at the Bard College Center for Curatorial Studies, Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. Currently living in Bristol, England, he takes up his new post July 1. He replaces Johanna Burton, who has become director and curator of public engagement at New York’s New Museum but remains on the Bard faculty.
As graduate program director, O’Neill will oversee curriculum and faculty development, directing research initiatives, and the center’s artist and curator residency programs.
O’Neill, who has written extensively, published his latest book, The Culture of Curating, The Curating of Culture(s), in 2012 with MIT Press. He has edited or coedited volumes such as Curating Subjects (2007) and Curating and the Educational Turn (2010, with Mick Wilson), both published by de Appel and Open Editions.
Some of the 50-plus exhibitions in which O’Neill has had a hand include “We Are Grammar,” Pratt Institute, New York (2011); “Coalesce: Happenstance,” SMART Project Space, Amsterdam (2009); and “General Idea: Selected Retrospective,” Project Arts Centre, Dublin (2006).
O’Neill has also worked as a lecturer at institutions such as the University of London and Middlesex University.
