Pieter Hugo

Cape Town-based photographer Pieter Hugo’s previous exhibitions at Yossi Milo have zeroed in on niche African subject matter, like the filmmaking scene in Nigeria (“Nollywood”) and an electronics dump site in Ghana (“Permanent Error”). The title of his current show, “Kin,” emphasizes its closeness with Hugo’s own live experience. Shot over the past eight years in South Africa, the large-format color photos show the troubled country as, according to Hugo, “a fractured, schizophrenic, wounded and problematic place.” In still lives of ramshackle interiors, landscapes of abandoned mines and townships, and portraits of servants and his own family, Hugo forces himself to confront the society into which he was born and continues to live.
