Yielders Path, a new installation by artist and New Museum Triennial co-curator Ryan Trecartin and his collaborator Lizzie Fitch, has been billed as a “secret show.” Yet this low-profile press strategy is the least interesting aspect of the immersive work. Entering the back-room environment, demarcated by heavy black curtains and signage, one is immediately transported into a space resembling both a faux-campground and first-class airplane cabin, complete with mood lighting. Avoid bumping into the half-mannequins shrouded in sleeping bags and lie down on the Tempur-Pedic-like chaise. On the ceiling, a hypnotic 49-minute video includes the artist duo’s signature painterly-meets-digital style punctuated with all kinds of floating signifiers—from Coca-Cola logos to images of a masonic temple—but the vibe is more psychedelic than tweakily verbose.
