Based in Los Angeles, Sam Falls came to prominence with his process-based multimedium practice springing from photography. For his show at The Kitchen, part of the series “From Minimalism into Algorithm,” Falls presents a moving performative collaboration addressing the loss of Jamie Kanzler, whom he called a brother. Hart of Gold (dancers Jessie Gold and Elizabeth Hart), outfitted separately in black and white, perform a choreographed sequence (through Oct. 3) at 5 p.m. each day, with additional 2 p.m. performances on Saturdays, atop rugs daubed with multicolored paint, set to a release by Kanzler’s indie musical project Oldd News. During the dance, combining balletic and more casual movements, Hart of Gold create circular compositions on the rugs. Later hung in the space, the rug paintings suggest spinning records, the circle of life, the tension between choreography and spontaneity, and influence between earthly realms.
