A week after Sandy struck New York, flooding galleries and damaging artwork throughout Chelsea, the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) announced a $250,000 Hurricane Relief Fund, established to help both member and non-member galleries begin to pick up the pieces post-storm. Soon after both David Zwirner and Mitchell-Innes & Nash galleries contributed $50,000 each to the fund. Early loan recipients, announced on Nov. 9, are Printed Matter, Wallspace, Derek Eller and Bortolami.
By throwing a benefit party tomorrow night, Paul Kasmin Gallery and Artspace hope to add an additional $50,000 to the ADAA’s growing fund. Neither of Kasmin’s two locations was damaged during the storm.
The party, held at the Hotel Americano on 27th Street, around the corner from Kasmin’s main branch, is free, although guests are encouraged to make a donation to the ADAA. Kasmin is also selling a newly editioned print of a 1972 painting by William Copley, whose work is on view at the 10th Avenue gallery through Nov. 21. The $200 print, titled Think (Flag), is available for purchase at the party as well as via the e-commerce site Artspace.
Artspace has several other prints for sale by artists like Walton Ford, Kenny Scharf, Sara Greenberger Rafferty and David Salle in their Hurricane Sandy Benefit Collection; a percentage of these sales will also go towards the ADAA relief fund.
