Already one of the northernmost venues in the West Chelsea neighborhood on 29th Street, Sean Kelly Gallery will decamp to 475 10th Avenue, at 36th Street, in the fall. The gallery will take the space of non-profit Exit Art, which is closing after 30 years of operation.
The move will more than triple Kelly’s space to 22,000 square feet with a two-story space designed by Toshiko Mori. It transplants the gallery into the Hudson Yards district of Hell’s Kitchen, just north of the planned terminus of the High Line park at 34th Street.
That area will be more accessible after the completion of the No. 7 subway line extension, which will bring the train to 34th Street and 11th Avenue.
The expansion, coming after 11 years in Chelsea, is in keeping with the latest additions to Kelly’s roster, with Idris Khan, Peter Liversidge, Nathan Mabry, Alec Soth, Kehinde Wiley and, most recently, Terence Koh joining the gallery
