The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has received a major gift from local gallery owner and collector Paul Andriesse. The donation includes 60 drawings, paintings and photographs by artists and designers including Marlene Dumas, Charles and Ray Eames, Thomas Struth and James Welling.
Andriesse, who has been collecting art since his student days, opened his gallery in Amsterdam in 1984. He is known for recognizing and supporting young artists at the beginning of their careers, such as René Daniëls, who Andriesse first worked with in 1979, and Rineke Dijkstra, who exhibited at Galerie Paul Andriesse in 1993. Andriesse’s gift was carefully selected to enhance the Stedelijk’s current holdings, like the museum’s recent acquisition of three video works, which includes a piece by Dijkstra.
An exhibition organized by Stedelijk curator Bart Rutten, featuring some of the newly donated pieces, will be on view May 3-Sept. 1.
