As climate change rapidly envelops the natural world, is there more likely to be fewer seasons, or more? The premise of James Cohan’s summer group show is not so literal as to propose an additional calendrical season, the 21 mostly contemporary artists/groups instead examining how ecological and technological changes impact once natural patterns. Work in “The Fifth Season” ranges from Erin Shirreff’s silent film made up of photos she took of an Edward Steichen photograph of an apple on a computer screen; Spencer Finch’s series of paintings of butterflies based on photos placed in the artist’s peripheral vision; and a print representing Katie Paterson’s public art project that involves growing a forest of 100 trees in Norway, each of which will be turned into a book in 2114.
