Matt Greco and Gregory Sholette, Workers' Housing Saadiyat Island: Guggenheim Museum Souvenir.
Six activist artists and groups, including Nsumi Collective, Peter Fend and Mierle Laderman Ukeles, come together in a show that highlights a range of socially engaged practices. Dominating the center of the gallery are Occupy Museums’s tabletop models of an art fair and a gallery, of the sort that curators might use to plan an exhibition layout; here, they are enlisted to the artists’ cause of highlighting “extractive” practices that rely on uncompensated labor from artists, interns and others. Much smaller but equally incisive are Matt Greco and Gregory Sholette’s tiny models of workers’ housing for the laborers who will build the Guggenheim Museum’s Abu Dhabi outpost, created in protest over labor conditions there. They were supposedly available for sale for 20 bucks in the museum store; now they’re $150.
