Hedda Sterne was an artist best known for her affiliation with the Abstract Expressionists in the 1950s. She was the only woman photographed with the group known as “The Irascibles” by Nina Leen for Life Magazine in 1951. The last surviving artist from this photograph, Sterne passed away on April 8, at the age of 100.The artist painted her entire life, but never developed a signature style, or achieved institutional and market success like that of her male peers.
In a February 2007 interview, the artist’s last, Sterne told Joan Simon the truth about the early days.
