New York-based artist Rachel Rose has won the illy Present Future Prize, which is awarded yearly at the Turin-based art fair Artissima to an emerging artist.
Rose won for A Minute Ago, a video in which a hail storm interrupts a bright day at the beach. “It was so nice a minute ago,” says one bather as she runs to an umbrella. The storm intensifies to the point where many bathers suspect they might die. All of this is followed by computer-composited images of Philip Johnson in his famed Glass House, and a Nicolas Poussin painting there. The work is available in its entirety on the artist’s website, where it can be seen as an embedded video closest to the bottom.
Parisian gallery High Art brought Rose’s work to Artissima, which is held annually at the pavilion built for the Winter Olympics, and which closed its fifth edition on Sunday. Along with the €10,000 ($12,400) Rose won, the artist has also been awarded an exhibition at the Castello di Rivoli, Turin’s museum of contemporary art.
