COURTESY 1:54 AND PIONEER WORKS
The London-based 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair will be jumping across the pond, albeit briefly, this year for 1:54 NY, the fair announced yesterday on its website. The pop-up will be held at Red Hook art center Pioneer Works from May 15 to May 17, to coincide with Frieze New York.
Founded in 2013 by Touria El Glaoui, 1:54 is devoted to promoting contemporary African art. In October, the fair held its second edition at Somerset House in London.
Like its London counterpart, 1:54 NY will be designed by London-based studio RA Projects. It will also feature a Forum led by Koyo Kouoh, the founder and artistic director of Senegalese art center RAW MATERIAL COMPANY. The participants in 1:54 NY Forum have yet to be announced, but it will likely be similar to this year’s London Forum, which included film screenings and talks with curators about the future of African art, among other events.
In an email, Camille Ostermann, a gallery liaison for 1:54, told ARTnews that the pop-up will showcase approximately 15 galleries. The exhibitor list will be announced in late February or early March.
