The thrill of finding new additions and unexpected deletions on the ARTnews Top 200 is what makes our annual list such a compelling read. The key criterion for inclusion on the list is activity: these are collectors who are actively collecting. For the 2014 edition of the Top 200, some big players from past editions, including Adam Sender—who, in the past year, shut his hedge fund, Exis Capital Management, Inc., and sold an estimated $70 million worth of artworks from his collection through Sotheby’s—were removed to make room for 33 additions. 27 of these new collectors have never appeared on a “Top 200” list before. Notable newcomers include Bed, Bath and Beyond co-founder Warren Eisenberg, Campbell’s Soup heiress Charlotte Colket Weber, and Chinese billionaire Wang Jianlin.
Below, we’ve split the 33 into those who have been on previous editions of the list and are returning after an absence—like Elaine Wynn, who, as market watchers will note, the New York Times pointed to as the purchaser of Francis Bacon’s triptych Three Studies of Lucian Freud for $142.4 million at Christie’s New York last November—and those who are on the list for the first time.
