Print media has been preserved! Or at least it has been in a work by Kirsten Pieroth at the Frieze booth for the Brussels-based gallery Office Baroque.
For Untitled (The Wall Street Journal), 2015, Pieroth took copies of the titular publication—crinkly newsprint and finger-staining ink and all—and boiled them down, literally. The watery remnants are preserved in glass jars previously used as containers for jelly, salsa, ketchup, and the like.
There are 31 jars filled with newspaper-infused liquid in the piece, which relates to similar works the Berlin-based Pieroth has made with the New York Times and books she has read. “A lot of her work deals with progress and research,” said Louis-Philippe Van Eeckhoutte, director of Office Baroque. “This is about the decay of print media, which she is trying to find a way to preserve.”
