Tim Van Laere Gallery in Antwerp, Belgium, will move to a freshly built freestanding space in the city’s Nieuw Zuid district in the spring of next year. Its new space will be designed by the Brussels-based firm OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen and will occupy 1,000 square meters, or about 10,800 square feet.
Tim Van Laere, the enterprise’s founder, told ARTnews that he thinks of his space as an “artist’s gallery,” and that the new building will allow those on his roster to develop bigger and more ambitious projects. “This move is a very important step for the gallery—a step forward,” Van Laere said. “I always had a utopic dream of building a completely new space, and not going into a space and renovating it for the gallery. . . . The space that we have now is just too small for the ambitions of the artists and the gallery, so we need to upscale to develop further.”
Van Laere’s gallery, one of the most notable in Belgium, was founded in 1997 and currently represents Gelitin, Adrian Ghenie, Friedrich Kunath, Tal R, Juan Uslé, and Franz West, among others.
