As large-scale, in-person events begin to resume in the United States, the Armory Show in New York, one of the country’s biggest art fairs, said it plans to gather together 195 exhibitors at its new home, the Javits Center. The fair is due to take place from September 9–12, 2021.
Most major fairs had to dramatically shrink in scale for their in-person 2021 editions. Frieze New York, which is set to open next week, will have 66 galleries, well below its close 200 participants in pre-pandemic years, and Art Basel Hong Kong, due to be staged at the end of May, plans to have 104 galleries, fewer than half of its typical 250 galleries.
That’s not the case for the Armory Show, which is slightly increasing its number of exhibitors from 183 at its 2020 edition, the last major art fair to take place before the U.S. lockdown, to 194 for this iteration.

Among the galleries that will partake are Victoria Miro (with locations in London and Venice), Galeria Nara Roesler (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, New York), Kasmin (New York), Sadie Coles HQ (London), Anton Kern Gallery (New York), and David Zwirner (New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong). Those participating for the first time include Galleria Millan (São Paulo) and Proyectos Ultravioleta (Guatemala City).
Notably missing from this edition of the fair are some of the world’s biggest blue-chip galleries, including Pace, Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, Lisson, and White Cube.
“For over 25 years, the Armory Show has been a cornerstone of New York City’s cultural scene and an economic driver for the global art market,” the fair’s executive director, Nicole Berry, said in a statement. “We believe NYC will emerge from this pandemic stronger than ever, and we’re excited to anchor the fall arts season at this pivotal moment when the city’s cultural organizations are reopening and experiencing art in-person is becoming possible again for everyone.”
Alongside the main exhibitors section, there will be several other sections: Solo for single-artist presentations, Presents for galleries in business under 15 years with recent work by one or two artists, and Focus, which is curated by Wassan Al-Khudhairi, chief curator of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. The Focus section will present work that looks at “the artist’s role in shaping the future and imagining realities beyond our current condition,” according to a release. The Platform section, organized by Claudia Schmuckli, curator-in-charge of contemporary art and programming at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, will present large-scale installations and site-specific works at the fair
After the 2020 edition of the fair ended, the Armory Show announced that it would leave its longtime home of Piers 94 and 92 on Manhattan’s Westside for the Javits Center and that it would change its date from early March to early September. Because of these planned changes, it is one of the few fairs that has not had to cancel any edition as a result of the pandemic.
As part of its move to the Javits Center, all of the exhibitors will for the first time in years be under the same roof and the fair’s layout has been designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners, which has taken into account social distancing into its design. The 2021 edition will also require masks to be worn by all visitors, timed entry, and coordinating crowd flow. The fair did not say if it would require visitors to submit negative PCR test results or proof of vaccination, as Frieze New York plans to do.
