The Armory Show has revealed the artists participating in the “Platform” section at this year’s edition of its annual fair, which will take place from March 7 to 10 in New York. “Platform” showcases large-scale artworks and installations; its 2019 iteration is curated by Sally Tallant, executive director of the Queens Museum and former director of the Liverpool Biennial.
For her section, Tallant has lined up nine artists: Andreas Angelidakis, Siah Armajani, Tania Candiani, Ryan Gander, Iris Häussler, Xaviera Simmons, Jessica Stockholder, Super Taus, and Pascale Marthine Tayou. Most of the works on view in the section were commissioned specifically for the fair.
Titled “Worlds of Tomorrow,” the section will draw its inspiration from the 1939 New York World’s Fair and relate that event to today’s current political climate.
Tallant said in a release, “It is through art that we express our hopes and fears, and articulate alternatives and new possible worlds. Artists often speak out for the rights of people on the margins of society and now that we are facing a shift in how those people and margins are defined, we need artists to continue to be brave.”
Among the section’s offerings are Gander’s installation of ovoids covered in artificial fur called Het Spel (My neotonic ovoid contribution to Modernism) (2019), Armajani’s 3D-printed Seven Rooms of Hospitality (2016–17), and Candiani’s Reverencia (2019), which incorporates video, drawings, and performance.
