Blain Southern gallery will open a space in New York, the Art Newspaper reports. The gallery’s first New York show will be with Abdoulaye Konaté, opening in May during Frieze Week.
In a statement to the Art Newspaper, the gallery said that opening in New York “is the logical next step in the international expansion of Blain Southern.”
Blain Southern currently runs spaces in London and Berlin. Among the artists on its roster are Enrique Martinez Celaya, Ed Moses, Kishio Suga, and Bill Viola.
The gallery’s new New York location has some history: it is the former Chelsea home of Cheim & Read gallery, which announced last June that it would depart the neighborhood for Uptown and transition into a “private practice, concentrating on the secondary market, sculpture commissions, and special projects.” Cheim & Read had been operating out the space since 2001.
