Bruce Silverstein Gallery in New York now represents Daido Moriyama, the Japanese photographer who had previously been shown by Luhring Augustine gallery. A representative for Luhring Augustine told ARTnews that Moriyama is no longer on that gallery’s roster.
Moriyama began working as a freelance photographer in Osaka in 1964, and eventually moved to the United States, where his work was featured in the Museum of Modern Art’s 1974 exhibition “New Japanese Photography.” Since then, the artist has been acclaimed for his skill in capturing changing social mores in postwar Japan and the effects modernization has had on the country’s culture.
The artist was the subject of a solo exhibition in 2012 at Tate Modern in London, as well as a complete retrospective at the National Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan, in 2011.
