Cecilia Alemani, the Donald R. Mullen Jr. Director and Chief Curator of High Line Art, has been tapped to curate the Italian Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale. The Italian publication Artribune, which first reported the news, notes that Alemani is the first woman to curate the pavilion in a while—Vittorio Sgarbi, Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, and Vincenzo Trione were the last three people to oversee projects.
Alemani is best known for her work in the United States—she has been with the High Line, in New York, since 2011, and before that she worked at the X-Initiative. She has also curated the Projects sector of Frieze New York each year since the fair’s arrival on Randall’s Island in 2012, and the projects she commissioned for this year will go on view at next week’s fair.
No details about the artist chosen to show at the Italian Pavilion are available yet, so stay tuned. The 57th edition of the Venice Biennale opens May 13 of next year.
