After nearly two full decades in Chelsea, Derek Eller Gallery is planning to move to the Lower East Side next year, taking a former garage space with tall ceilings at 300 Broome Street. The new space is right across the road from Simon Preston Gallery and about a block away from galleries like Brennan & Griffin, Callicoon Fine Arts, and James Fuentes. The new location “will be a space upgrade for our artists and exhibitions,” Brian Faucette, the gallery’s director, said in an e-mail.
Eller, which opened in Chelsea in 1997, has since 2006 been located on a stretch of West 27th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues known for promising, young ground-floor galleries, which are increasingly rare sights in the ever-more-expensive neighborhood. Eller’s decision, combined with news last month that its neighbor Foxy Production will move to Chinatown, effectively marks the end of that chapter of Manhattan gallery history. (Another one of its neighbors, Wallspace, shuttered its doors at the end of this summer.)
There is not yet an exact opening date for the new downtown gallery, but shows by Nancy Shaver, Peter Shire, Peter Linde Busk, and others are planned.
Eller’s multigenerational roster of artists includes Jesse Greenberg, Karl Wirsum, and Thomas Barrow. The gallery’s current shows, by Michelle Segre and André Ethier, are on view through November 21.
