Back in February, Washburn Gallery said that the lease on its 57th Street home had not been renewed and that it was thus on the hunt for new accommodations. Also, the increased security in the area nearby Trump Tower was less than ideal. “Nothing will solve that, as there’s no solution to Trump,” Joan Washburn, the gallery’s owner, told my colleague Nate Freeman.
Now Washburn Gallery has found a new space, at 177 Tenth Avenue in Chelsea, which is between West 20th and 21st Streets, just a short walk from powerhouses like Gagosian Gallery and David Zwirner. The new location will open September 14 with a show focusing on the legacy of the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal program that led to the creation of quite a few major artworks in public places around the United States.
The exhibition is titled “The WPA,” and its subtitle is “Save the NEA.”
