Four years after co-founding the Lower East Side gallery Sargent’s Daughters with Allegra LaViola, Meredith Rosen has left to open her own space a few blocks north of Chelsea. Rosen told ARTnews that Meredith Rosen Gallery, as the new operation will be called, is opening in January at 330 West 34th Street, in the Midtown-adjacent area now home to Sean Kelly Gallery and a stone’s throw from the new Hudson Yards development. Downtown, Sargent’s Daughters will continue its programming at 179 East Broadway.
Rosen’s new gallery will kick off its programming with a show of new work by Jennifer Rubell, who had her New York solo debut at Sargent’s Daughters earlier this year—and who is now following Rosen to the new space.
Rosen and LaViola opened Sargent’s Daughters in 2014. Rosen worked at the BravinLee gallery, and LaViola had for years run an eponymous gallery that occupied the address that would house Sargent’s Daughters. During the partnership, the gallery maintained a varied and exciting program—they gave multiple solo shows to young artists such as Jordan Casteel and Cy Gavin, filled a summer show with work by 40 female artists, and staged a collaborative exhibition that matched never-before-seen Ross Bleckner floral sketches with work by the German artist Volker Eichelmann.
LaViola said the split from her partner is amicable, and announced, “I’m continuing the gallery myself. Sargent’s Daughters continues as planned, in the same location, with me and some collaborative stuff with other curators.”
A solo exhibition of work by Peter Granados is up now at Sargent’s Daughters until December 3, and a show by the artist and actress Jemima Kirke opens December 13.
