Frieze London announced its 2015 film commissions today. Part of an initiative known as Frieze Film, which is part of Frieze Projects and curated by Nicola Lees, it includes a new work by Charles Atlas. All four films will air in England on Channel 4.
The new Atlas film will be done in collaboration with the choreographers Silas Riener and Rashaun Mitchell. Shot this summer at Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center, in upstate New York, Atlas’ film will be “a long-form stereoscopic moving image work,” Frieze’s website notes in a fairly ambiguous statement. Frieze’s website also indicates that the film will be made “specifically for the televisual context.” The last time Atlas made a film for Channel 4 was in 1986, when he aired Hail the New Puritan.
The other three commissioned artists are Xavier Cha, Gery Georgieva, and the collective Thirteen Black Cats. All four artists’ films will be broadcast on Channel 4, through Random Acts, later this year.
Correction, 7/20/15, 9:47 p.m.: A previous version of this article misstated Thirteen Black Cats’ name and the timing of the shoot for Charles Atlas’ new film. Both have been corrected accordingly.
