FRIEZE
Beginning Monday, May 1, the New York art world will be filled with action as galleries prep shows, auction houses ready previews, and art fairs swing open their doors for a week with the Frieze New York art fair at its center. Frieze opens to invited guests on Thursday, May 4, and to everyone else the next day, but it is just one of many fairs vying for the attention of collectors. Below, a breakdown of the fairs that are on deck.
Frieze New York
The sixth edition of Frieze New York, appearing once again on Randall’s Island, will feature over 200 galleries from 31 countries. Maintaining its Spotlight, Frame, and Focus sections, Frieze will also host its first symposium on May 5, “Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA” in collaboration with the Getty and the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. Expect an array of both solo and group exhibitions, as well as talks, performances, and immersive works. Admission to the island will set you back a healthy $46.

TEFAF Spring
TEFAF will return to the Park Avenue Armory for its second New York run. Where its inaugural fall edition focused on fine and decorative art from antiquity through 1920, the Maastricht-based organization will now showcase modern and contemporary art and design. Tom Postma has designed the interiors of this luxe fair, which is known for its decadent opening celebrations.

SPRING/BREAK
Dubbed “BKLYN IMMERSIVE,” this edition of Spring/Break fair breaks away from its typical “curator-driven model” and promises instead 12 “site-specific, immersive installations and environments.” Housed this time at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn, the fair has previously taken place in St. Patrick’s Old School, the former James A Farley Post Office, and 4 Times Square: Admission is free to the public.

1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair
1:54 will host its third U.S. edition at Pioneer Works in Red Hook with about 20 galleries. The fair will be accompanied by an educational talk series, 1:54 FORUM, dedicated to “exploring the radical imperatives underlining African and African American artistry today.”

Portal
Portal returns for its second Frieze Week run. Trading in last year’s Federal Hall setting for a space on Broome in SoHo, Portal has selected its artists on an invitational basis, including many who showed in the previous nine editions of its sister show, the Governors Island Art Fair. Admission is free.

Collective Design
Collective Design aims to be “an opportunity to explore the significance of design and art across creative disciplines and everyday life.” Held at Skylight Clarkson Square, the fair will feature an entrance designed by the LAB at Rockwell Group, a career retrospective on Swiss designer Mattia Bonetti, a collaboration with the Noguchi Museum, and site-specific work from Brook Landscape using debris from Hurricane Sandy. A total of 27 exhibitors are on tap.

Context and Art New York
Art Miami’s New York fairs will once again share Pier 94. Context focuses on mid-career and emerging artists, while Art New York aims to show “never-before exhibited works from both primary and secondary markets.” Art New York features more than 70 galleries, Context more than 40.

Salon Zürcher
The 19th edition of the self-described “mini art fair” is organized around African art and artists and features five galleries, from France, Kenya, Ethiopia, and New York.
