Jia Aili, the Chinese artist whose show at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo in Malaga, Spain, just closed at the end of June, is now represented by Gagosian Gallery.
“Having followed Jia’s artistic journey thus far, we are very pleased to establish a working relationship with him, and we look forward to his first exhibition with the gallery,” Larry Gagosian said in a statement.
Aili, who lives and works in Beijing, is a rising star on China’s art scene—and already internationally established before the age of 40. In a press release announcing the news, Gagosian Gallery said, “While the content of his epic figurative paintings is unmistakably of his own time and cultural context, his formal virtuosity and complex layering of narrative reveal a deep and astute working knowledge of the inventions and traditions of painting from the Renaissance to the present day.”
In a sign that Gagosian, which has 16 galleries but none in mainland China, might be looking to extend its foothold in Asia, the press release is available in both English and Chinese versions.
