The estate of Harvey Quaytman, the late-20th-century American abstract artist, is now represented by Van Doren Waxter, the Upper East Side gallery announced today. It had been represented in New York by McKee Gallery, which closed last year. Van Doren Waxter will hold an exhibition of Quaytman’s work next year, prior to a retrospective to be held at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in 2018.
Quaytman’s canvases were often oddly shaped, and later on in his career his abstractions began moving toward a style of rectangular shapes and bold color palettes. His work is held by the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and numerous other museums.
In a statement to press, gallery partner Dorsey Waxter said, “Harvey Quaytman’s work is an important addition to the gallery’s commitment to American abstraction from the post World War II era. He was an artist of broad artistic interests ranging from Arabic calligraphy to Kazimir Malevich. We look forward to exploring in depth the range of his disciplined and varied approach to geometric abstraction.”
