Los Angeles–based artist Enrique Martínez Celaya has joined Kohn Gallery’s roster, which includes Ori Gersht, Rosa Loy, Mark Ryden, and others. Martínez Celaya will have his first solo exhibition at the Los Angeles enterprise in September, and a selection of his works will be on view at the gallery this week, in conjunction with Frieze Los Angeles.
Martínez Celaya’s practice spans painting, installation, sculpture, and photography. Inspired by literature and philosophy, his depictions of the natural world and lone figures often explore feelings of abjection and isolation. Alongside his art practice, he currently serves as provost professor of humanities and arts at the University of Southern California.
In a statement, Michael Kohn, the gallery’s founder, said of Martínez Celaya, “The poetic beauty of his work adds a new and important aspect to our artist roster, seen throughout his challenging and complex use of mediums that weave together physical, emotional and conceptual qualities.”
Martínez Celaya’s artworks have been shown at the Miami Art Museum, the Orange County Museum of Art in Santa Ana, California; the Hood Art Museum in Hanover, New Hampshire; the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia; and the Museum der Bildenden Künste in Leipzig, Germany; among other institutions.
The artist will continue to be represented by Jack Shainman Gallery (in New York), Galleri Andersson/Sandström (Stockholm), and Blain|Southern (London and Berlin).
