Galerie Lelong & Co., of New York and Paris, has added Leonardo Drew to its artist roster. The news comes as the Brooklyn-based artist readies City in the Grass, a sculpture made out of wood and colored sand that will go on view in Madison Square Park in New York this June. New York’s Sikkema Jenkins & Co. gallery, which previously showed the artist’s work, will no longer represent Drew.
The artist’s work typically transforms materials such as wood and metal so that they appear to sprout from walls. In tribute to the histories of process-based abstraction and Post-Minimalism, Drew often oxidizes, burns, and decays his materials such that they are wholly different from their original state.
In 2009 the University of Houston’s Blaffer Gallery organized a survey of Drew’s work that later traveled to the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina, and the deCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Massachusetts. His work currently figures in a show of works from Pamela J. Joyner and Alfred J. Giuffrida‘s collection at the Smart Museum of Art in Chicago. His first exhibition with Galerie Lelong & Co. is currently set for this spring.
