Mariah Robertson, the Brooklyn-based artist who has won renown for her experimental abstract photographs, is now represented in New York by Van Doren Waxter gallery. She has staged solo shows in the city with the East Village’s American Contemporary (née Museum 52), which closed in 2015. Robertson’s last major outing in Manhattan was one-person show in May at 11R, the Downtown younger sister of Van Doren Waxter. (The two galleries officially merged on September 1, taking the Van Doren Waxter name.)
While juicily colored and action-packed, Robertson’s works evince a kind of intricate, subtle control underlying their surfaces, and they can recall the paintings of Simon Hantaï and Sam Gilliam as much as the abstract efforts of peers like Walead Beshty. Her work has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art (where she has appeared in group shows), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Sir Elton John Photography Collection. In Los Angeles she’s repped by M+B.
Robertson also runs an art space on the Lower East Side called Situations with Jamie Klempay, which will open a solo show with Becca Albee this Saturday evening.
