In addition to its Milan and London spaces, Massimo De Carlo gallery will soon add a third location, in Hong Kong. To celebrate the gallery’s 30th anniversary, the new space is set to open on March 21 with a show of paintings by Yan Pei-Ming.
The new space will be in the Pedder Building, a power move that puts the gallery in the same location as Hanart TZ and Gagosian’s Hong Kong location. In the past few years, De Carlo, the eponymous gallerist, has been inching toward having a spot in Hong Kong’s developing art scene—he’s been on Art Basel Hong Kong’s selection committee, and has brought his gallery to every edition of the fair since it began, in 2013. (The Hong Kong space’s opening is also timed to occur right before the 2016 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, which kicks off on March 24.)
Since opening its first gallery in Milan, in 1987, Massimo De Carlo has made a name for himself by representing a mix of big-name artists and lesser-known emerging stars—its slate currently runs the gamut from art-world staples like Maurizio Cattelan and Rudolf Stingel to up-and-comers like Elad Lassry and Rashid Johnson. He opened his London space in 2009.
