Judith Hopf, the German artist who is perhaps known for her brick sculptures that mimic body parts and architectural structures, will now be represented by New York’s Metro Pictures gallery. She joins a roster that includes Camille Henrot, Louise Lawler, Oliver Laric, and Cindy Sherman.
Hopf’s work appeared earlier this year in New York at a three-person show at 47 Canal, where Hopf showed sculptures of a ball and a pushcart rendered in bricks. They turned relatively light objects into things so heavy that they couldn’t possibly be picked up, and were typical works for the artist for their drily funny sensibility.
Her work will also be seen next year at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts, the KW Institute of Contemporary Art in Berlin (where Hopf, who also works in video, is planning to create a site-specific piece that engages with—and augments—the museum’s architecture), and the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen.
