COURTESY ANDREW KREPS GALLERY
New York’s Andrew Kreps Gallery announced today that it represents the New Hampshire–based sculptor Michael E. Smith. The Chelsea gallery also represents such noted artists as Darren Bader, Roe Ethridge, and Erika Verzutti.
Smith has become known for lo-fi sculptures he makes using objects that bear traces of their previous owners. Smith’s tattered, threadbare materials come from treks through the decaying parts of cities, or from perusing eBay for used items that people don’t want anymore. Having spent a large part of his life in Detroit, Smith is sometimes seen as an artist whose work reflects the economic downturn’s effect on the Michigan city.
New Yorkers may recognize Smith’s work from a recent solo show at SculptureCenter, though Smith has also shown work this year in Amsterdam, at de Appel, and in Brussels, at the Établissement d’en face. In November, the de Appel show will travel to the Kunstverein Hannover, in Germany.
While Andrew Kreps is the only New York gallery to represent Smith, he is also represented at two other locations in the United States—in Detroit, at Susanne Hilberry Gallery, and in Los Angeles, at Michael Benevento. In Europe, Berlin’s KOW and Milan’s Zero represent Smith.
