Simon de Pury, the founder of Phillips, is releasing a memoir, so the art world has taken some time to reflect on his career. This magazine’s very own senior staff writer Nate Freeman says, “It will always be Sotheby’s and Christie’s. They are just so cut-throat against each other that it’s very hard for a third house to break into that fierce rivalry between the two of them.
