Cristina Ruiz: “France’s highest court has dismissed an appeal by French descendants of Peggy Guggenheim who sued the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 2014, alleging that it had failed to respect the late collector’s wishes in its management of the Venetian palace and the Modern art collection it contains.” The plaintiffs had argued that the foundation should not have accepted and displayed at the Venice institution a gift of art from Rudolph and Hannelore Schulhof that required works from Peggy Guggenheim’s collection be taken off view for a period. Activism
A group that is attempting to force right-wing billionaire Rebekah Mercer to leave the board of the American Museum of Natural History in New York for her funding of groups that dispute climate-change science planted satirical items in the museum’s gift shop as a protest. Among the products: postcards of Mercer (labeled as a “climate change denier”) and a “home fracking set” for children. [Huffington Post]
Museum Philanthropy
Paul J. Schupf has given $2 million to the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine, which will use the funds to open a space in the city’s downtown. [Press Release]

Performance Space New York (the East Village institution formerly known as Performance Space 122) is presenting a group exhibition on the storied writer Kathy Acker, curated by the space’s director, Jenny Schlenzka, and artist Bjarne Melgaard, who has also contributed a puppet show to the presentation. Melgaard said of Acker, “I thought that she was fascinating for her opinions and extreme sensibilities: the strength to be both soft and hard, and to be able to articulate complex problematics in a language that doesn’t make anyone feel inadequate.” [T: The New York Times Style Magazine]

Architect Balkrishna Doshi, who helped develop low-cost housing in India, has won the 2018 Pritzker prize, his profession’s highest honor. He is the first Indian to receive the prize. [The Guardian]
