Artforum reports that William Scharf, who is associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement, has died at age 90. Scharf was a close friend of Mark Rothko, and he even helped the famed painter create the Rothko Chapel in Houston. [Artforum]

White Columns and Shoot the Lobster have given their annual $5,000 award to the Detroit-based artist and activist Tyree Guyton, who leads a local outdoor museum called the Heidelberg Project.
